Si rivela la vincitrice indiscussa Beyoncé per essersi aggiudicata l'"Album of the Year" grazie al suo "Lemonade", e per essere risultata la migliore artista femminile per la categoria R'n'B/Pop. Si rivela invece a pari merito la corso per il premio "Video Dell'anno" che vedono vincitori Bruno Mars e Beyoncé: la cantante texana vince grazie a "Sorry", mentre l'artista hawaiano per "24k Magic".
Il cantante si è anche guadagnato il "Best Male R'n'B/Pop Artist", e si è esibito live con "Perm".
Protagonisti della serata anche Mary J. Blige che ha cantato "Love Yourself" con A$AP Rocky e Chris Brown, che ha vinto il "Best Collaboration" per "Party" con Gucci Mane e Usher. Il riconoscimento al miglior gruppo va ai Migos, mentre il "Best Male Hip Hop Artist" è Kendrick Lamar. Da segnalare la vittoria di Chance the Rapper come nuovo miglior artista afroamericano. Inoltre all'artista è stato assegnato l'"Humaritarian Award" per il suo grande impegno nelle opere di beneficenza.
