Come ogni anno, durante la cosiddetta "Season awards", non possono mancare i Billboard Music Awards, ambiti premi musicali che in America vengono considerati tra i più importanti insieme ai Grammy Awards e agli American Music Awards. I BMA consegnano i premi in base alle vendite degli artisti, ricavate dalle classifiche Billboard in particolare dalla 200 e dalla Hot 100.
Quest'anno la cerimonia di premiazione si svolgerà il 22 Maggio alla T-Mobile Arena di Las Vegas e verrà mandato in onda alle 8 p.m. ET sul canale televisivo ABC. A presentare la serata ci saranno il rapper Ludacris e la cantante R&B Ciara.
In questi minuti sono state svelate le nominations che prendono in considerazione il successo, non la data d'uscita dei lavori discografici, nell'arco di tempo che va dal 23 Marzo 2015 al 17 Marzo 2016. A farla da padrone troviamo The Weeknd con ben 19 nominations in sedici categorie, una vera sorpresa essendo che queste sono le prime nominations che riceve in tutta la sua carriera. Seguono Justin Bieber con 12 nominations in undici categorie e Drake e Fetty Wap con 11 a testa.
AGGIORNAMENTO: Il primo performer confermato è Pink che si esibirà sulle note di "Just Like Fire", colonna sonora del film Alice Trought The Looking Glass.
AGGIORNAMENTO #2: Secondo USA Today, Britney Spears sarà premiata con il Billboard Millennium Awards che è stato consegnato solo ad altre due artiste, Beyoncé (2011) e Whitney Houston (2012). La cantante americana, inoltre, aprirà lo show esibendosi sulle note di un medley composto dalle sue celeberrime hit.
AGGIORNAMENTO #3: Un'altra protagonista della serata sarà Celine Dion che canterà "The Show Must Go On", grande classico dei Queen, e sarà premiata con l'Icon Award.
AGGIORNAMENTO#4: Madonna salirà sul palco dei Billboard Music Awards per offrire un tributo a Prince, leggenda della musica venuta a mancare circa un mese fa.
AGGIORNAMENTO#6: Durante la cerimonia verrà trasmesso in esclusiva il video musicale che accompagna Send My Love (To Your New Lover), terzo singolo estratto dall'album di successo 25 di Adele. Non confermato se la cantante salirà sul palco per promuovere il brano.
AGGIORNAMENTO #5: Alla lista dei performers si aggiungono: Shawn Mendes, i DNCE, i The Go-Go'S, Justin Bieber (medley di "Sorry" e "Company"). Demi Lovato ("Cool For The Summer"), Nick Jonas con Tove Lo ("Close"), Fifth Harmony, Troye Sivan, Ariana Grande, Blake Shelton con Gwen Stefani, Rihanna e Meghan Trainor (NØ)
Dopo l'iniziale smentita, la label di Dr Luke ha rilasciato un comunicato annunciando che Kesha potrà esibirsi domenica ai Billboard Music Awards.
